Some elementary students are already in summer break, and CPS students are ending the school year today. In order to keep my children reading and engaged during summer, I signed them up to Summer Learning Challenge with the Chicago Public Library. The program which was only “Reading program” last year has been expanded this year. Here are few programs that you can register your kids and keep on track during summer.

Chicago Public Library’s Summer Learning Challenge Dates: June 17, 2013 – August 10, 2013
This program has become very comprehensive since last year. In addition to reading, they added “Learn”, “Create” and “Discover”. You register for the program at your library, get your booklet and start logging the books and the minutes kids read. There are experiments you can do and other resources you can learn and discover in the booklet. Local libraries have lots of in-house programs. There are many add-ons such as Bedtime Math. Every time you visit the library with your log book, you enter a raffle to win books and other prizes. The Chicago Public Library presents the Summer Learning Challenge in partnership with Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Park District, Museum of Science and Industry, Art Institute of Chicago, Goodman Theatre and the National Summer Learning Association.

When children sign up for this program, they can explore, play and learn with partnering organizations, such as parks, museums and libraries and earn badges along the way. They can unlock exploratory challenges and make their own projects to add to their skills. They’ll showcase their work at an end of summer event in Chicago.

I am a mother of two and a type of person who you would call “Jack of all trades, master of none”. As you might guess from categories, I love my children, reading, sewing, gardening, traveling and cooking. I also work full time so I have to be practical to do all the things I want to do in a 24-hr-day. More About Me
