We’ve had our compost bin for the last 5 years, but it’s been opening at the seams and duct tape isn’t holding it together anymore. So I’ve been eyeing tumbling compost bins for a long time.  I purchased this 80-gallon tumbling compost bin from Walmart. It’s not as big as the old one. Hopefully, if it holds to its promise, it should compost faster.
IMG_4239We also wanted to get rain barrels to limit the rain water flow to the sewage line under our house to prevent sewer back-up during flash floods. We’ve finally got all of them, and got our rebate as well. It was a good deal. We’ve purchased the rain barrels from METROPOLITAN WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT OF GREATER CHICAGO.

The rebate goes on until  December 31, 2013. If you are planning to buy rain barrel or compost bin, even if you won’t be installing the rain barrels until April (best case scenario), you better get it now to take advantage of the rebate. You could also buy a qualifying tree, shrub or native plant as well but I don’t think you could find a place to plant them now.

For more information visit Chicago Sustainable Backyards Program’s website.

  • Rebates are only available to City of Chicago residents and items must be installed at a Chicago residence. Limit of one rebate for each item per installation address, per year.
  • Rebates are offered on products from Chicago-based retailers. Online orders will only be accepted if they are from a vendor that has a physical retail presence in Chicago.
  • Rebates must be submitted by January 31, 2014. Items must be purchased between December 31, 2012 and December 31, 2013.

I am a mother of two and a type of person who you would call “Jack of all trades, master of none”. As you might guess from categories, I love my children, reading, sewing, gardening, traveling and cooking.
