Decorative bunk bed curtains for children

Decorative bunk bed curtainsSince the children moved into their bunk beds, I have been planning to sew decorative curtains that would reflect their own interests and likes. We went to the fabric store together and they picked their own patterns. I wanted to get a black sky, stars and galaxies fabric like the one I used for a shirt for my son, we could only find this blue. This project marked one of the biggest stupidities I have ever accomplished. Instead of asking for feet, I have asked for yards. So we measured the bed, added the hem and cut the fabric from 7 yards for the 7-feet curtain.

I marked the windows and cut them out.

I cut out the screens from a remaining sheer curtain fabric and sewed onto the windows.

I added rockets, I cut out of a scraps of this shirt I had sewn. Then I inserted long wooden sticks to the sides to hold the curtain straight (instead of hanging them from the ceiling). I had to attach velcro bands to hold the wooden stick ends to the bed posts.

The curtain for the bottom bed had a door – which turned into a major headache later on.

After I sew the windows, I added two flower pots out of felt and glued flowers, again cut out of scrap fabric I used to sew this dress.

I added velcro bands to hang the curtain from the wooden slats of the upper bed. Once I hung them, I showed them to the kids. Instead of happy cheers, all the hell broke loose because my son didn’t have a door on his curtain.

I got quite upset about the initial reaction at first. Eventually, I made an addition the short side part with a door, which doesn’t stay very straight, but he got his door.

I guess, besides decoration, you can use these curtains to make the bed cozier and play-house-like. That might help the transition to a new room/bed for kids who might have issues with his/her own bed.

Even if your kid is sleeping in a regular twin bed, you can sew holes to put the wooden sticks in and build a straight standing curtain like I did for the upper bed.
